John 6:28-29 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
The wrong question to ask God is, "What must I do to save myself?" That is the wrong question because there is no answer. There is nothing any person can do to save themselves. We must all be careful because there are those that will tell us that there are things we can do that will save us, but they are not telling the truth.
Even though some of the things that people might suggest we do to save ourselves are good; they are not good enough to provide redemption. The fact of the matter is there is nothing we can do to make up for or to pay for what we've done. We can make amends with other people, but we do not have the moral capacity to make amends with God. There is nothing we have that He needs and there is nothing we can do to take away what we have done. He is a holy God and He cannot and will not tolerate a person with sin in their past. If God did tolerate sin, He would cease to be a holy God. He would then be a God that cannot be trusted and heaven would not be a place of peace.
Because God is God all who sin are dead to God and will die a physical death and remain spiritually dead. Their spiritually dead condition will cause them experience the excruciating and eternal pain of an eternal spiritual death.
So what are we to do? Is all lost? Is there no hope?
Jesus gives us the simple answer to the answer, "what must a person do to be saved?" The answer is, "to believe in the one he has sent.”
Believe what? Believe that Jesus is God. Believe that He died to pay the penalty for your sin. Accept His grace and mercy to be forgiven. Submit to His leadership in your life and allow Him to lead you to live the live He created you to live. You will never live it perfectly, but it will be better than the life you might live on your own.
Don't forget Ephesians 2:8-10. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
